On June 28, 2023, South Korea amended its Administrative Procedure Act and Civil Act to use international age (만나이) as the official standard for all laws, contracts, and official documents. This brought Korea in line with China and Japan, which had already adopted international age earlier.

The Korean age system originated from the East Asian traditional counting method, which considered the time spent in the womb as the first year of life. It also reflected a collectivist cultural view — rather than celebrating individual birthdays, everyone ages together on the New Year.
